The New York Times

Featuring Collin Erickson

This piece was created for an ARTD 333 Type and Image assignment at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. I was assigned a partner named Collin, and I had to interview him to get to know his interest. I learned that he had two cats, loved origami, and often sketches. With this information, I  had to create a New York Times magazine cover in whatever style I preferred. Therefore, I chose the hand-drawn style not only to represent Collin's love for drawing images but add a level of simplicity to the cover and allow space for Collin to be the focal point, with him being the only image in color.

Process Work

In this project I  interviewed my partner and learned he loved video games, has two cats, does origami, plays the guitar, and often day dreams. I took all of these things plus a few more and applied it to the sketches below. One thing that was important to Colin was the song Be As You Are because he felt it was relatable to him, so I made sure to include that in the final project.
